Sustainability!
Definition: the quality of not being harmful to the environment or depleting natural resources, and there by supporting long-term ecological balance
Economy: In Hawaii there are many large hotels and resorts, a lot of tourist hot spots. This is harmful to the environment but the Hawaiian people are very knowledgeable on the subject. They do not let people build in protected land areas. The resorts and hotels bring in money that helps keep the islands going, paying for water for the rest of the island and other needs everyone must have.
Environment: The environment in some areas on the islands of Hawaii is damaged. The buildings that are put up for tourist reasons or just growth of a community destroy habitat for animals that live on the islands. There are many endangered species on the island that need the habitats to survive. The ocean water is also polluted small amounts just like any other body of water due to run off from cars and other pollutants on the islands. This is something that can't really be helped but besides the runoff, the people of Hawaii are very careful not to pollute the waters around the islands because they are very aware of how important the reefs and sea grass and other habitats are to the islands.
Social: Hawaii deeply depends on the surrounding ocean. The fishing, the tourism, even just the tides bring in all the money that is made on the islands. If there were not an ocean for the people of Hawaii to use the island would surely soon become uninhabitable.
Environmental Awareness: The Hawaiian islands are very well taken care of. The habitats, on land and in the water are very well taken care of because there are a lot of protected species that live on and around the islands. There are still pollutants that make it to the lands and the seas around the islands but not enough to make inhabiting there enough of a problem to totally change their ways. There are new ways that people are coming up with to try to stop runoff and update sewage treatment centers updated to handle what they would need to. There are also beach cleanups all the time such as the "Stanford Woods" clean up where volunteers go out and clean the beach. There will always be pollution until we as the human race decide to change our ways of living. Hawaii does have pollution but not enough to make Hawaii an unsustainable place. Hawaii is a sustainable environment.
